Like the author of the above-mentioned post, I have no idea what caused my problems.
I am also still not sure whether the link is a complete solution, or whether I should reinstall the graphics libraries completely, but since creating the link, everything has worked fine for a few weeks now. The rest of the Singleton concept ensures that if there is another copy of the object with this same script attached (and there will be, you need to put this object into every scene), then the other object will be destroyed and this one (original) will be saved. Put the Game Master or Global Object (or whatever is carrying this script) into every scene you have, and try to transition the scenes at run-time.
